El Camino Hospital

Project Summary

For the hospital to meet seismic safety requirements under California state law, a comprehensive master plan for the “Hospital Community of the Future” was developed. The first phase of the project replaced the existing hospital with a new 460,000 square-foot, 314 bed, state-of-the-art general acute care hospital. The new building includes the medical/surgical patient wing, emergency department with 36 beds, a 10-bed observation unit, a conference center, and flexible nursing modules with 28 critical care and 180 adaptable beds. Upgrades to the 87,505 square foot North Addition consolidates outpatient services including radiation therapy, endoscopy, infusion (cancer care), outpatient imaging, comprehensive diagnostic center, facilities management/engineering, and medical records department. The plan also includes an upgrade and expansion of the existing central power plant with new equipment and co-generation as well as the addition of 65,000 square feet of new parking. The entire project is supported by the installation of an upgraded telecommunication/data system that guarantees wireless coverage everywhere. The staff can access patient information at all times while on the move.
