Big Sky Substation North is owned and operated by AES and is the first to tie into the Big Sky Substation that feeds into the Southern California Edison (SCE) grid. The substation was designed by Rosendin Renewable Energy Group to provide 660 MW of clean solar renewable energy to the original Big Sky Substation. Rosendin was responsible for all design, procurement, and installation for this project, and self-performed all civil, concrete foundations, steel installation, and electrical connections inside the substation. Over 110 employees and union contractors with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) were employed to complete the job. The substation initially accommodated a 105 MW solar resource, with the intent to expand significantly with additional solar generation sites to a total of 990 MW of solar power added to the grid.
