High school students get insight to construction industry through Racing the Sun program

Rosendin, the electrical contracting industry’s largest employee-owned firm, is encouraging students and parents to challenge their perceptions of a career in skilled trades. The Tempe regional office recently opened its doors to high school students interested in learning about electrical engineering, computer modeling, project management, design-building, and more.

Rosendin hosted 4 students from Shadow Ridge High School on Feb. 18 in conjunction with the Racing the Sun program, which encourages students to focus on STEM classes (science, technology, engineering, math).

“As an electrical contracting firm that works on large scale projects like stadiums and data centers, we are thrilled to get a chance to speak with local students about all the opportunities in this industry,” said Brandon Stephens, Division Manager at Rosendin. “There are many STEM related career paths available to students, whether they decide to go on to college or join an apprenticeship program after high school, and we are proud to support programs that educate students on all their options.”

Since 2016, Rosendin has been a program sponsor for Racing the Sun, a hands-on STEM program that teaches students to solve problems in a real-world experience. Students must complete a series of milestones throughout the school year including touring companies like Rosendin, speaking with mentors, and learning about career paths.

This year, the program transitioned over to SARSEF – Southern Arizona Research, Science and Engineering Foundation, which centers its efforts on serving underrepresented student populations including minority, female, and families from rural settings.
