In March, the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of America honored Rosendin Electric, San Jose, Calif., with the 2018 Grand Award for Construction Safety Excellence. This was part of the 19th annual Construction Safety Excellence Awards, sponsored by Willis Towers Watson. Fifty-nine contractors from across the United States competed for this prestigious award.

In addition to the Grand Award, Rosendin Electric also received the first-place award for specialty contractors with over three million manhours.

“Safety at Rosendin begins with passion,” said Marty Rouse, Rosendin Electric’s vice president, safety.

“Passion for ensuring that our people go home safe each day; for building projects that enhance the lives of people in our communities; and for building a greater tomorrow.”

Rosendin Electric is an employee-owned EC with more than 6,000 employees and revenues of $2 billion-plus. In 2017, Rosendin worked 9,933,678 manhours with a total recordable incident rate of .91.

Over the years, the company has implemented various policies that positively affected safety on its projects. These include the following: a “stop work card” principle that enables any employee to stop work if they feel unsafe, an accident investigation form that aims to discover the root cause of any accident and various “whys” that led to it, a pre-task plan policy that helps employees stay focused and able to recognize hazards, a tool training poster that provides QR codes that link to training and safety videos, real-time auditing to keep track of hazards and maintain a safe work environment, and more.

The company also maintains a safety hotline that is available to all employees. In addition, the EC’s education and training program includes programs on forklifts, confined spaces, NFPA 70E, OSHA 30-hour training, emergency and crisis management, motor vehicle operation and more.

“Competing for, and winning, these two awards is one of the most rewarding things I have done in my 39-year electrical construction career,” said Mike Greenawalt, senior vice president, Rosendin Electric.

“To receive this award, as a specialty contractor, amongst the largest contractors in the nation, is truly an honor.”
