Double Platinum LEED®, the California Academy of Sciences included a rainforest, planetarium, museum of natural history, research laboratories, an aquarium, office and retail space, and exhibit floors.

An extremely challenging area of work for which Rosendin Electric contributed innovation for design and construction was in the exhibit floor areas. Nearly 70,000 square feet of Walker Duct was poured in place in the exhibit floor decks for power, lighting and tele/data. The Walker Duct consisted of three divided cells with pre-set access every 25 feet.

Surrounding the “Living Roof” are 60,000 photovoltaic cells.  These solar panels will generate approximately 213,000 kilowatt-hours of energy per year and provide up to 10% of the Academy’s electrical need.  The use of solar power will prevent the release of 405,000 pounds of greenhouse gas emission into the air.

The Academy has several intricate control systems that are deeply linked to the environmentals for the building. The most complex system being the windows, shades, and dimming controls which are completely integrated in a Lutron control system.  This System speaks directly to the BMS system in order to open windows, raise and lower shades, and dim or brighten lighting, depending on time of day, outside air temp and humidity as well as natural daylight. Even when foggy in San Francisco, it’s a bright clear day inside the Academy.

Hunt Construction Group Inc. has had the great experience of working with Rosendin Electric on many construction projects, both small and large scale, over the last twenty years. I personally have had great experiences with all of Rosendin Electric's employees. All have been very professional in the approach and execution of our projects over the years. I look forward to working with them in the future, and count our company as lucky to have the strong, long-term working relationship that we do.
